Iwalani Else, Ph.D.
Iwalani Else, Ph.D., R.N. is an Assistant Professor and serves as the Associate Director of the National Center for Indigenous Hawaiian Behavioral Health and the Director of Infrastructure and Collaboration for the Asian and Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center. Dr. Else is a NIH Health Disparities Scholar through the loan repayment program in Health Disparities Research and is a former fellow of the American Sociology Association's Minority Fellowship Program in Mental Health.
She has investigated the role of Hawaiian culture on mental health and is the PI for a study examining Hawaiian culture in education and co-PI on community alcohol consumption grant and a project examining suicide in Hawaiian youth. She served as PI for a study the National Cancer Institute to examine adolescent cigarette and alcohol use in Hawaii youth and has published several peer-reviewed scientific articles, including ones on Hawaiian physicians and suicide among Pacific Islanders.
