Dr. Engel is an expert on population-based health care and clinical risk communication for chronic illnesses, particularly as they manifest after war, terrorism, or disasters. He is a highly regarded health services researcher who has coauthored over 50 scholarly articles and who currently serves as PI or co-PI for four nation-wide multicenter clinical trials testing the impact of various health care improvements for military and VA health care beneficiaries. Dr. Engel is the DoD champion for DoD-VA clinical practice guidelines on post-deployment health evaluation and management, medically unexplained symptoms, major depressive disorder, and is a member of the group developing a new VA-DoD PTSD guideline. Dr. Engel is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University, and the Director of the Department of Defense Deployment Health Clinical Center at Walter Reed in Washington DC.
